Catalysts for Social Action (www.csa.org.in) has been working on enhancing the number of adoptions across the country. One of our field research studies indicated a huge mismatch between waiting children and waiting parents, prevalent in almost all parts of the country. Many metropolitan agencies have large numbers of parents waiting to adopt, often for more than a year. On the other hand, agencies just outside the metros have several children languishing for years, in their wait for homes. Many children have waited in vain and then, moved into institutionalized care in Destitute Homes, thus closing entirely, the Adoption option.
CSA identified a similar mismatch amongst agencies in Maharashtra; while agencies in Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur had several waiting parents, 7 agencies in Latur, Udgir and Nanded between them, had 121 waiting children and very few, if any, registrations of parents. Also, lack of placement opportunities for the girl child was a common feature cutting across all 7 agencies.
CSA’s Latur Pilot aims at finding homes for all 121 children and adopts a 3-pronged approach – up gradation of childcare standards in the agencies, extensive local awareness and promotion and, facilitation of placements both, through direct interventions and, through transfers in keeping with the prevalent regulations, to metro agencies where the children can be placed.
This website aims primarily, at making available, information on the participating agencies and their waiting children, Our hope is that suitable childcare facilities and short, processing cycles will motivate waiting parents to make a considered decision to choose to work with these agencies.
