Inter-Country Adoptions
Inter-country adoption is an adoption by a person/ couple who is not an Indian citizen resident in India. This category of Adoption is regulated by CARA guidelines for Inter-country adoption. Foreign Prospective Adoptive Parent/s (FPAP) include:
- Foreign Nationals
- Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) i.e. a person who is a foreign citizen (not being a citizen of Pakistan, Bangladesh and
other countries (as specified by the Government of India, from time to time) if,
- s/he at any time, held an Indian Passport.
- s/he or, either of her/ his parents/ grandparents/ great grandparents, was born in and permanently resident in
India as defined in the Government of India Act 1935 and other territories that became a part of India thereafter
provided neither was at anytime a citizen of any of the aforesaid countries (as referred to) above;
- s/he is the spouse of a citizen of India or a person of Indian origin covered under (a) or (b) above.
NRIs are Indian citizens, where both the spouses have not stayed in the country for a continuous period of 2 years
immediately prior to the registration for adoption.
