ABOUT
OURSELVES
Background
:
It was
in February 1983, twenty years ago, that ‘Vatsalya’
was registered as a Public Charitable Trust in Mumbai,
under Bombay Public Trust Act, 1950.
Aims and
Objectives broadly cover the upliftment of downtrodden
members of our society with the emphasis on destitute
children and children in crises.
THE
MAIN CENTRE AT KANJUR (EAST), MUMBAI.
Care
& Rehabilitation of Destitute Children –
-
Inspite
of considerable constraints of space so far, ‘Vatsalya’
has efficiently and effectively managed its Child
Care & Rehabilitation Centre from June 85 at
its small location in Kanjur (East). By now, 912
destitute children have been provided love and
warmth at the Centre. At any given time there are
about 60 children in the Child Care Centre. Now
the Centre has moved to its new building at Kanjur.
Two floors of the building, earmarked for the
Centre, can now comfortably accommodate 100
children
-
We
strongly believe that the right place of a child
is its own home and loving parents, where the
child feels more secure. It is also a universally
accepted fact that the child develops more
comfortably in its own cultural and social milieu.
‘Vatsalya’ therefore preferred the best option
of rehabilitation of children, by way of
in-country adoption. It is only the special need
children who cannot get placed within the country
are proposed for inter-country adoption so that
they are not deprived of parental love. So far, 4
such special need children have been placed abroad
in inter-country adoption, while 752 children have
been placed in adoption within the country.
-
It
is the tradition of Vatsalya Trust that even after
18 years the adoptive parents and adoptees
maintain close family relationship with the
institute and its staff members and offer
assistance in many ways. Vatsalya periodically
organize pre-adoption and post-adoption counseling
sessions for the adoptive parents. Annual get-to-gether
of adoptive parents, adoptees, donors and
well-wishers is also a regular feature for the
last several years.
SANPADA
PROJECT, NAVI MUMBAI
It was
in June 1999 that the three storeyed building of ‘Vatsalya’
came-up in Navi-Mumbai at Sanpada. The following
activities are being conducted in this project.
* Balikashram
:
Here
currently, 61 girls in the age group of 4 to 16 years
are provided shelter nourishment, medical care and all
educational and developmental facilities. They are
either destitute girls or those coming from socially
backward and economically weaker sections of the
society. Emphasis is on education and personality
development in such a way that when they go back to
the family they will feel more confident and
self-reliant. Higher education to those who show the
necessary talent and vocational training courses to
others who have no inclination for higher formal
education is the general policy guide line. One girl
who appeared and passed the Secondary School
examination in 2003 is continuing her college studies.
Vocational
courses like tailoring, fashion designing, beautician,
mehendi are in progress. Some other courses are being
planned. These vocational courses are open to women
from weaker sections, as well. During the year,
several events, competitions, discussions sessions
etc. are innovatively scheduled with a view to develop
their personality. The aim of all these efforts is to
ensure that the girls return to the families with
confidence and self reliance.
Elder’s
Home :
There
is an Elder’s Home on one of the floors of the
building. Interaction between the young and old
creates homely atmosphere.
Sponsorship
Programme -
Recently,
‘Vatsalya’ introduced Sponsorship Programme for
the school going students who are below poverty line
and are deprived of their basic needs like health and
Right to Education. Currently 20 students are covered
in this programme.
Future
Expansion Programmes at Kanjur
(i) Child
& Parents Guidance Centre –
The
Centre will cater to the needs of the children with
various psychological problems - behavioural,
emotional and scholoastic. This Centre will also
tackle social problems including mental disorders like
autism, depression etc.
(ii) Documentation,
Training, Research Centre (DOTReC)-
This
Centre will provide reliable basic information on all
aspects of child issues like child labour, street
children, destitute children and others. The Centre
will also establish a resource center by networking
with other institutions already working in these
fields; and will arrange training and refresher
courses on child related issues.
(iii)
Nursing Assistants Course -
We
propose to conduct by the beginning of next year
Nursing Assistants Course for girls who could secure
marginal passing marks at S.S.C. Examinations. The
modalities are being worked out.
(iv) Educational
Assistance -
Educational
assistance to poor but deserving students appearing
for S.S.C. Examinations will be provided free by our
Trust in consultation with the School Authorities in
Kanjur / Bhandup areas.
